The Hightower Trail Orchestra is the primary feeder for the Pope High School Orchestra and has produced outstanding musicians for the past 25 years. The orchestra program consists of 354 students in grades 6-8. The orchestras achieve consistent superior ratings at the GMEA District 12 Large Group Performance Evaluation and Solo & Ensemble Evaluation. Orchestra members consistently earn positions in the District Honor Orchestra and All-State Orchestras.
The 8th Grade Orchestra has performed at the Midwest Music Clinic in Chicago (2004) and the GMEA In-Service Conference (2003, 2013, 2019). They have also performed at the Georgia State Capitol (2015, 2016). The Chamber Orchestra performed at the ASTA National Orchestra Festival in 2018. In 2015, the Orchestra Program received the GMEA Exemplary Performance Award.
Classes rehearse for 42 minutes daily. Extracurricular opportunities include small ensembles such as string quartets, quintets and Chamber Orchestra,. Directors are available for help every day before and after school. Students use this time to pass-off method book lines, prepare for auditions, and satisfy their weekly practice requirements.
